Herbal Highlight: Ashwagandha

Herbal Highlight: Ashwagandha

Stress affects far more than just the mind. When the body is under constant pressure, it can impact sleep, digestion, energy levels, immunity, and mood. Over time, this prolonged stress response can leave the body feeling depleted and out of balance.

This is where adaptogenic herbs can offer support.

Adaptogens are a group of herbs that help the body adapt to physical, emotional, and environmental stress. Rather than forcing the body in one direction like stimulants or sedatives, they help regulate the body’s stress response and support overall balance.

They work by supporting key systems involved in stress, including the nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system. This can help the body return to a more balanced state after periods of strain.

Some well-known adaptogens include Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Holy Basil (Tulsi), and Siberian Ginseng and while each has slightly different benefits, they all share the ability to support resilience and improve energy.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha, also known as Withania, Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry is one of the most widely used adaptogenic herbs in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It has been used for thousands of years as a restorative tonic to support stress resilience, energy, and overall wellbeing.

Stress & Anxiety Support

Ashwagandha is best known for helping the body cope with stress. Research suggests it can help regulate the HPA axis, the system responsible for controlling the stress response.

A 2019 randomized controlled trial published in the journal Medicine found that participants taking ashwagandha extract experienced significant reductions in stress levels and cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone) compared to a placebo.

Improved Sleep Quality

Ashwagandha is also commonly used to support better sleep. By helping regulate stress hormones and calm the nervous system, it may improve sleep quality and help people fall asleep more easily.

Mental Clarity & Focus

Chronic stress can contribute to mental fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Ashwagandha may support mental clarity, memory, and cognitive performance.

A 2017 randomized controlled trial reported improvements in memory and focus in adults supplementing with ashwagandha.

Anti-Inflammatory & Immune Support

Ashwagandha contains naturally occurring compounds called withanolides, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds may help support immune function and reduce inflammation associated with chronic stress.

Adaptogens & Resilient Health: The Flow-On Effect

Adaptogens work on the nervous system, which creates a positive flow on effect for the entire body.

When the nervous system is constantly activated, digestion can slow down and gut function may become disrupted. This can affect:

  • Nutrient absorption
  • Gut microbiome balance
  • Immune function
  • Digestive comfort

By supporting the nervous system and helping the body shift into parasympathetic mode (rest and digest), adaptogens may have a flow-on effect throughout the whole system.

When the nervous system settles:

  • Digestion often improves
  • Nutrient absorption becomes more efficient
  • Gut microbiome diversity may be supported
  • Immune resilience strengthens

The body systems are connected, and by addressing stress and nervous system imbalances, the body can begin to build up stronger resilience in all areas with multiple systems in the body working together more harmoniously.

During these times, adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha can act as a gentle ally, helping the body feel more balanced, resilient, and grounded.
