According to various reports, 2019 is going to be ‘the Year of the Vegan’ as more and more people turn to plant-based diets in order to improve their health, the environment, and their ethical code.
Why Vegan?
Ditching meat can help to improve various markers of your health from cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, obesity, blood pressure, and much more. By reducing your meat intake, most people increase their vegetable intake as well which means more vitamins, minerals, and fibre.
What is Vegan?
The difference between vegans and vegetarians is that vegans consume no animal products whatsoever, such as eggs, milk, cheese, and yogurt, whereas vegetarians simply avoid meat and fish products.
Isn’t that hard?
Nope! Thankfully, there are a myriad of choices available for substitutes from Linda McCartney to Quorn. Many supermarkets even run their own meat-free brand.
Not all of the products are designed to replicate the taste of meat, either. You can get vegetable bakes, burgers, and sausages that taste delicious whilst also delivering a large dose of your 5-a-day.
But it is expensive, right?
Not at all! 500g of beef mince costs between £2.50-£4 whilst 500g of most meat-free mince is between £1.50-£3. The same goes for many other meat substitutes. As well as this, tins of legumes and pulses tend to cost under 50p, leaving more money to spend on fresh fruit and veg. Those that are too expensive can be bought frozen. It all comes down to smart shopping!
