We now see liver transplants as semi-common place, but the first transplant back in 1963 didn’t go to plan as the drugs they used for immunosuppression didn’t work correctly. In 1967, the creases were ironed out and the first successful liver transplant was finally possible.
Many liver transplants are necessary due to lifestyle factors such as high alcohol consumption. Binge drinking is one of the most common factors behind liver degradation, but also, being overweight can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Even if these factors do not apply to you, there are ways you can improve the health of your liver each day.
Supplements such as Milk Thistle as well as and brassica vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc.) contain liver-strengthening compounds which can help to keep the organ in good shape.
A japanese study once found that drinking 5-10 cups of green tea per day was associated with improved liver health, most likely due to the antioxidant levels.
Essentially, any natural foods rich in nutrients will be good for your liver, so the more natural your diet is, the healthier your liver and the rest of your body will be.
